Global Initiatives on Climate and Clean Air Yield $15 for Every Dollar Invested

NAIROBI, KENYA / RankWire.AI / – A new comprehensive global assessment reveals that synchronized efforts to combat climate change and reduce air pollution could generate approximately $15 in economic advantages for every $1 spent. This analysis was published by the UN Environment Programme and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition on September 7, examining 25 strategies targeting major sources of emissions and pollutants. It is described as the first extensive worldwide economic evaluation of integrated climate and clean air initiatives.

Climate and clean air action delivers $15 for every $1 spent
Clean air and climate action can deliver major health, economic and emissions benefits.

The study projects that these measures could deliver annual economic gains equivalent to 2.8% of global GDP by 2035. This percentage is expected to increase to 4.5% by 2050 and reach 11.4% by 2100 if fully adopted. Even without accounting for non-market welfare improvements, these measures would return roughly $4 for every $1 invested. The report further estimates that delaying implementation by a single year could result in losing over $1.5 trillion annually in combined benefits.

The 25 strategies encompass sectors such as energy, fossil fuel systems, industry, transport, agriculture, residential energy, and waste management. They include promoting renewable energy, increasing energy efficiency, adopting cleaner cooking and heating technologies, expanding electric vehicle use, and tightening vehicle emissions standards. Additional measures target oil and gas leaks, venting and flaring practices, fertilizer application, livestock management, rice cultivation, and crop residue burning. The package also promotes better waste disposal and reductions in hydrofluorocarbons and other climate pollutants.

    Economic impacts across key industries

Air pollution is a significant factor in economic assessments due to its impacts on health and productivity. The report links human-caused outdoor air pollution to approximately 6.4 million premature deaths globally in 2025. Household air pollution contributed to an additional estimated 2 million premature deaths, including around 300,000 children. Outdoor pollution also played a role in 5.5 million new childhood asthma cases and 2 million new dementia diagnoses during the year.

Achieving full implementation of these measures could prevent a total of 144 million premature deaths related to air pollution by 2050. This figure includes 96 million deaths associated with ambient air pollution. The assessment also forecasts hundreds of millions fewer cases of chronic illnesses. Compared to baseline projections, immediate adoption would halve global carbon dioxide emissions by 2050, cut methane emissions by 60%, and reduce several major air pollutants by roughly 70%.

Climate mitigation and health improvements align

The proposed package could limit global warming to about 0.34 degrees Celsius by 2050 and 1.4 degrees by 2100. By the century’s end, concentrations of key air pollutants are expected to decline by as much as 85% under the scenario. The estimated costs of implementing these measures amount to approximately 0.7% of global GDP over the next decade, decreasing to about 0.5% by 2100. The report notes that stronger enabling conditions could accelerate full deployment by as much as ten years.

UN Environment Programme and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition issued these findings on the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies. The assessment highlights institutional barriers as key obstacles to broader adoption of existing strategies. Addressing these conditions could unlock up to $10 trillion in savings by 2040. The results link climate policies, air quality, health costs, and productivity within a unified economic framework that encompasses solutions already available across major sectors.
