Severe Flooding Across Indiana Results in Seven Fatalities After Intense Storms

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA / RankWire.AI / – Tragedy struck Indiana as at least seven individuals lost their lives due to powerful storms and unprecedented flooding. Continuous heavy rainfall caused rivers to overflow, leading to extensive damage to roads, homes, and critical infrastructure. State public safety officials confirmed the updated death toll on Sunday as floodwaters gradually receded in several severely affected areas. The storm activity commenced on August 11, bringing repeated heavy rain across central and southern regions of Indiana.

Among those who died were a 4-year-old boy, three men, and three women, according to emergency authorities. The fatalities occurred in Delaware, Jennings, Lake, Porter, LaPorte, and Henry counties. Delaware County reported two deaths, while each of the other counties documented one. Notably, authorities confirmed the death of a 31-year-old cyclist on Sunday, found in a section of road that had collapsed amid flooding in Henry County.

National Weather Service reported that certain regions received over a foot of rain during the multi-day weather event. The White River reached levels unseen in over a century, with Anderson and Noblesville experiencing new record crests surpassing those set in 1913. At Nora, the river attained its highest level since that year. Officials in Indianapolis described this flooding as the city’s most severe in more than 30 years.

Record-breaking flooding prompts evacuations across Indiana

Emergency responders carried out hundreds of evacuations as floodwaters inundated neighborhoods and closed roads throughout the state. Boats were deployed by first responders to rescue residents trapped by rising waters. In Noblesville, officials reported approximately 170 residents evacuated within 72 hours, with over 550 residential units impacted by flooding. Indianapolis set up emergency shelters as crews performed water rescues and monitored neighborhoods along the White River.

The storms also caused widespread power outages, affecting nearly 130,000 utility customers late Sunday — a reduction from a peak of approximately 300,000 during the storm. Floodwaters damaged or washed out roads and impacted bridges in multiple communities. City officials reopened the floodgates on Sunday after the White River reached its peak and began to fall. Ongoing inspections of neighborhoods, infrastructure, and properties impacted by the flooding continued across affected areas.

Federal aid activated following statewide emergency declaration

Governor Mike Braun declared a statewide disaster emergency and mobilized additional resources for the storm response. President Donald Trump approved an emergency declaration after Indiana requested federal assistance. This allows the Federal Emergency Management Agency to support state, tribal, and local efforts in response. The aid covers actions necessary to protect lives, public health, safety, and property in storm-affected areas.

By late Sunday, river conditions improved from their peak levels, yet flooding persisted in parts of central Indiana. Federal weather officials reported that major flooding along the White River had decreased to moderate flood stage. However, water levels remained above flood thresholds at several monitoring sites, including locations near Indianapolis. Damage assessments by state and local agencies continued as residents returned to affected neighborhoods and communities managed the aftermath of flooded structures, damaged roads, and storm debris.
