OpenAI Rolls Out GPT-5.6 Luna as Default for ChatGPT Users Across the Globe

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI is broadening access to ChatGPT for Free and Go users by offering unlimited text interactions powered by GPT-5.6 Luna. The company announced this change will begin next week and will include safeguards to prevent misuse. During this rollout, GPT-5.6 Luna is becoming the default model for these users. Additionally, free users will gain a Think button, allowing the model more time to analyze complex questions before responding.

This unlimited access specifically pertains to text-based chats within ChatGPT. Limits for file uploads, image generation, and other tools needing extra processing will stay in place. The Think feature will launch alongside the expanded text allowance next week, enabling Luna to spend additional time reasoning before generating answers. As a result, Free and Go plan users will enjoy broader access to the core chat functionality, though not all features will be unlimited.

GPT-5.6 includes Luna, Sol, and Terra, each optimized for different levels of performance and computational needs. Luna is designed to be the faster, more cost-effective option in this lineup. OpenAI noted that ChatGPT now reaches nearly one billion users weekly across various activities such as search, research, planning, and writing. The recent update places Luna at the core of the standard experience for Free and Go accounts, while separate usage rules remain for tools outside basic text conversations.

Updated GPT-5.6 Sol features for paid subscribers

Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus and Pro now have access to an enhanced GPT-5.6 Sol version for their daily interactions. Sol is capable of quick responses and more in-depth reasoning within paid plans. The company states that the updated model provides more targeted replies and skips unnecessary details when shorter answers suffice. Plus and Pro members also receive a reasoning slider available across web, mobile, and desktop platforms. This feature allows users to adjust the level of processing ChatGPT applies to tasks such as research, planning, writing, and coding.

Internal testing indicates a decrease in factual inaccuracies for the latest models. Tests focused on prompts related to finance, healthcare, and law that require precise factual responses. Results showed about 62% fewer responses containing at least one factual error with GPT-5.6 Luna compared to GPT-5.5 Instant. Meanwhile, GPT-5.6 Sol demonstrated a reduction of approximately 68%. The company also noted improvements in handling details like dates, numbers, sources, rules, and assumptions when these impact answers.

Enhanced safety protocols maintained across expanded ChatGPT access

The newest models incorporate reinforced protections for users identified as under 18. The safeguards address issues such as romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges, and claims that could substitute real-world relationships. Additional restrictions target sexual content, eating disorders, dangerous activities, restricted goods, and graphic violence. The company said it has also introduced new evaluations for responses involving younger users. Unlimited text conversations for Free and Go accounts will continue to operate within the platform’s existing abuse prevention measures.

This update emphasizes the main ChatGPT experience and does not alter all products using GPT-5.6. The GPT-5.6 Sol versions employed in ChatGPT Work and Codex will remain unchanged under this release. Paid subscribers can now access the updated Sol model and reasoning controls. Free and Go users will see Luna as the default model starting this week. Unlimited text chats and the Think button will be available next week, while upload, image, and other tool limits will stay in place separately.
