US and Global Markets Feel Impact as Treasury Yields Surpass 5%

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – On Monday, the benchmark U.S. Treasury 10-year yield briefly exceeded 5%, a level last seen in October 2023. Since then, it had not remained firmly above that threshold since 2007. The yield later declined, with the U.S. Treasury’s official daily curve registering 4.97% for September 14. This figure remains significantly higher than the 4.15% recorded at the start of 2026, highlighting the swift increase in long-term U.S. borrowing costs.

Rising energy prices and inflation have contributed to the downward pressure on bonds. Brent crude traded near $107 a barrel on Tuesday after approaching $110 during Monday’s session. U.S. consumer prices increased by 0.4% in August and are up 3.4% year-over-year, according to federal figures. The energy index surged 16.3% over the past year, with gasoline prices rising 27.4%, underscoring fuel costs’ influence on inflation dynamics.

As markets focused on inflation and borrowing costs, the Federal Reserve commenced a two-day policy meeting Tuesday. Before the gathering, the central bank’s target range was set at 3.5% to 3.75%. Yields on longer-term bonds can increase independently of the Fed’s policy rate because market participants determine Treasury prices. The 10-year note remains a vital benchmark for mortgages, corporate debt, and other long-term financing options.

Cost of borrowing rises across real estate and financial markets

Rising Treasury yields are already impacting the U.S. housing sector. Freddie Mac indicated the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate reached 6.76% for the week ending September 10, the highest in over a year and up from 6.71% the previous week. A year earlier, the rate stood at 6.35%, illustrating how elevated bond-market borrowing costs are influencing home financing.

U.S. equities also declined Monday, weighed down by increasing yields, rising oil prices, and tech-sector losses. The S&P 500 dropped 0.48%, the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.56%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.29%. Higher Treasury yields offer more attractive returns on government bonds, intensifying competition for investment capital across markets. Since bond prices and yields move inversely, the surge in yields indicates falling prices for U.S. government debt.

Global bond markets push Treasury yields higher

The upward trend extends beyond the U.S., with government bond yields in several major economies reaching multiyear or multidecade highs in 2026. Elevated yields raise borrowing costs for governments and corporations issuing new debt or refinancing existing obligations. Given the U.S. Treasury market’s central role in global finance, shifts in its benchmark yields influence currency markets and credit pricing worldwide.

Tuesday’s trading in Asia kept the 5% Treasury yield in focus after Monday’s intraday breach. Oil prices remained elevated, and the U.S. dollar traded near a two-week high amid investors’ anticipation of the Federal Reserve’s meeting. According to the latest official Treasury data, the 10-year yield remained below 5% at Monday’s close. Despite the pullback, the benchmark stayed near its highest levels in nearly three years, continuing to shape borrowing costs throughout the U.S. economy.
